Guiding Questions throughout Module 1: Why are education, books, and reading important? How can I overcome learning challenges?
Class texts we will be studying throughout this Module:
Research Reading
"The research reading that students complete for homework will help build both their vocabulary and knowledge pertaining to overcoming challenges in access to education, books, and reading near and far. By participating in this volume of reading over a span of time, students will develop a wide base of knowledge about the world and the words that help describe and make sense of it." The focus this quarter is on biographies and reading about other countries and cultures. Here are some helpful links that your child may use for research reading at home:
Each month, students will choose research reading books and choose at least four prompts to respond to for homework. These prompts will be included in their homework packet.
These are the prompts that we will be working on in class: • What challenges are faced? How are they overcome? • What is the main idea of the text? What are some of the key details, and how do they support the main idea? • What do the illustrations (photographs, maps) tell you? How do they help you to understand the words? • What questions do you now have after reading? What would you like to learn more about? Why? • What does the text tell you about the importance of reading, books, or education? • What are the most important facts you learned from reading? • What is the most interesting fact you learned today? Why? • How does what you read today connect to something you have learned in lessons?
